Milkha Singh dies from Covid. the ‘flying Sikh’ of Indian athletics full story

India’s greatest athlete, Milkha Singh, has died from Covid-19, at the age of 91. Popularly known as “the Flying Sikh”, Singh has won 4 Asian gold medals and finished 4th in the 400m final at the Rome Olympics 1960.

We have lost a colossal sportsperson Milkha Singh – Prime Minister:

Sportspersons and Politicians and have expressed their deepest condolences over the death of Milkha Singh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that we have lost an extraordinary sportsperson. Milkha Singh has earned a special place in the hearts of the Indian citizens. His questionable personality Attracted millions of people. There is a great deal of grief over his decease.

Just a few days ago I have talked with Milkha Singh. But I dint know that this would be the last conversation. Many raising athletes will gain strength from their life journey. Prime Minister Modi has expressed his condolences over Twitter handle for too many fans around the world.

Milkha Singh reason behind the death:

Milkha Singh had affected by Covid-19 last month and admitted to the hospital northern city of Chandigarh and later died of complications from the disease on Friday. Milkha Singh’s wife, Nirmal Kaur, a former volleyball captain, also died earlier this week with the covid related symptoms, at the age of 85.

Milkha Singh life story and struggles:

Milkha Singh grew up in a small village in Multan province when British ruling India. As a young boy, Singh saw his parents and seven siblings being murdered during the Partition of India in 1947 when Pakistan is created. his father’s last words were “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, incite his son to run for his life.

The boy who runs to save his life then started to run for the medals. Milkha Singh arrived in India in 1947 as an orphan, Singh had done odd jobs to live until he gets a chance to join the army. It was there Singh has discovered his athletic abilities.

Milkha Singh medals and achievements:

Milkha Singh has won 5 golds in international athletic championships and in 1959 he was awarded the Helms World Trophy for winning 77 of his 80 international races. in 1958 Singh also won India’s first Commonwealth gold. Milkha Singh was invited to the International Athletic competition in Lahore, Pakistan to take part in the 200m event In 1960. He has not gone back to Pakistan since he runs away in 1947 after losing his family and initially refused to go.

But after some time Singh goes to Pakistan. Despite the huge support for Pakistan’s Abdul Khaliq, in the stadium, he took the bronze medal, while Milkha Singh went on to win that race. Pakistan’s second president Gen Ayub Khan awarded the competitors their medals, Singh received a title from Gen Ayub that has sticked with him for the rest of his life.

Pakistan says Milkha Singh the flying Sikh:

Gen Ayub said that “Milkha, Pakistan bestows upon you the title of the Flying Sikh. Singh told the BBC that If he known as the Flying Sikh today in the whole world, the total credit goes to General Ayub and to Pakistan.” Even though Milkha Singh never won an Olympic medal for India, his only wish was that “someone else should win that medal for India.”
